Nuclear Health Physicist
About this role
Health Physicist at Callaway Energy Center, a 1,100 MW pressurized water reactor in mid-Missouri. Provides technical support to radiation protection programs, ensuring safe and compliant plant operations through regulatory adherence, radiological work planning, and ALARA implementation. Multiple career levels available (Staff, Senior, Consulting) with corresponding experience and certification requirements.
Responsibilities
- —Provide technical expertise to radiation protection programs safeguarding plant personnel and public health
- —Monitor and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local radiation protection regulations, technical specifications, and industry standards
- —Coordinate corrective action responses and review Requests for Relief (RFRs) for the Radiation Protection Department
- —Develop and maintain applied radiation protection analytical efforts supporting plant operations
- —Perform radiological evaluations, calculations, and problem-solving for plant issues
- —Compile and submit compliance reports to NRC, state regulators, and maintain Technical Specifications documentation
- —Prepare and review changes to procedures, FSAR, Technical Specifications, and related documentation
- —Perform in-house surveillance activities to supplement quality control/assurance programs
- —Support special research and development work; evaluate equipment and software specifications for radiological use
- —Assume Emergency Response Organization (ERO) duties per Radiological Emergency Response Plan (RERP), including on-call response
- —Promote nuclear safety culture, radiological safety, and human performance through coaching and training
Qualifications
Staff Health Physicist: High school diploma/GED with 4+ years applicable experience (or master's degree in lieu of 1 year; doctorate in lieu of 2 years). Senior Health Physicist: Bachelor of Science in chemistry, physics, health physics, nuclear engineering, or engineering with formal radiation protection training (or 8 years applicable experience substitutes for degree); 6+ years applicable experience; NRRPT certification or ABHP Part 1 required. Consulting Health Physicist: Bachelor of Science in chemistry, physics, health physics, nuclear engineering, or engineering with formal radiation protection training; 6+ years applicable experience; ABHP certification or minimum 1 year experience as fully-qualified Radioactive Material Shipper at commercial nuclear facility. All levels: Proficiency with Microsoft Office and common computer programs; strong interpersonal and communication skills; leadership capabilities.
Desired
NRRPT certification or ABHP Part 1 (for Staff Health Physicist level); ABHP certification preferred for Senior and Consulting levels.
Location
Callaway Energy Center, Missouri. Standard day shift in office and plant environment; callouts, rotating schedules, and outage work required. On-call duty periods required for Emergency Response Organization support.
