About this role
Radiation Protection Technician II or III at Harris Nuclear Plant (Duke Energy). Responsible for radiological protection of the workforce during routine and post-accident conditions through area surveys, dose assessment, job coverage, and emergency response. Ensures compliance with NRC regulations and Duke procedures while maintaining ALARA principles.
Responsibilities
- —Perform radiological surveys of rooms and plant areas to document and identify changing radiological conditions
- —Provide radiological job coverage of maintenance and operations activities to ensure regulatory and procedural compliance
- —Brief radiation workers on radiological hazards present in work areas
- —Calculate and evaluate air sample results against procedures to verify radiological conditions remain within limits
- —Participate in emergency planning drills including response to contaminated injured workers, fission barrier degradation scenarios, and radiological releases
- —Participate in the station's corrective action program to identify and correct radiological conditions
- —Implement regulatory programs including radioactive material/waste shipping, instrumentation calibrations, source checks, and dosimetry issuance
Qualifications
For Technician II: Two-year degree (Associate of Science) in radiation protection, or Navy nuclear training, or equivalent (minimum 3 years experience in lieu of degree); 2 years radiation protection, chemistry, or computer science experience; Nuclear Unescorted Access Authorization; respiratory physical; ability to lift 50 lbs and use weight-rated equipment (275–325 lbs). For Technician III: Two-year associates degree or Navy Nuclear Power Program completion with ELT; 1 year Radiation Protection experience; 1 year nuclear experience; same access and physical requirements.
Desired
Associates degree from INPO-accredited institution; Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or related field; Navy ELT certification; National Registry of Radiation Protection Technicians (NRRPT) certification; ANSI 3.1 qualification for Power Reactor Radiation Protection Technician; demonstrated written and verbal communication skills; analytical and problem-solving ability; effective time management and prioritization; teamwork and flexibility; ability to adapt to changing regulations and work environments.
Location
Onsite at Harris Nuclear Plant, North Carolina. Must relocate within 75 minutes of plant. On-call duty rotation with defined response time. 5–15% travel. Physical requirements: lift 50 lbs, use weight-rated equipment up to 325 lbs, pass respiratory physical.
