About this role
Trainee operator role at a nuclear power station under direct supervision. You'll perform operational activities including equipment monitoring, system operations, valve alignments, and control room duties while learning nuclear facility operations under NRC-licensed supervision.
Responsibilities
- —Start, stop, adjust, test and operate pumps, valves, switchgear, controls and other system components as directed
- —Perform log taking, equipment evaluation, system valve alignments, and administrative duties
- —Monitor recorders and indicators in control room for nuclear and turbine generator systems to ensure operation within prescribed limits
- —Manipulate controls and observe nuclear and radiation monitoring instruments during reactor refueling in accordance with procedural controls
- —Implement tagging and system out-of-service requests, directing others to realign valves and hang tags
- —Initiate Emergency Plan procedures in accordance with implementing guidelines
- —Obtain overview data and perform calculations as required by procedure
- —Operate station communications systems
- —Participate as member of station fire brigade and function as fire brigade leader when required
- —Perform shift turnovers and maintain operational logs in accordance with NRC license requirements
- —Monitor plant indicators and alarms; identify emergency conditions and initiate designated actions
- —Respond to plant transients and take action to mitigate consequences
- —Identify and correct deficient conditions through the Corrective Action program
- —Assist shift supervision in directing and coordinating actions of assigned personnel
- —May be required to assist in reactor refueling operations
Qualifications
- —High school diploma or equivalent
- —Satisfactory completion of Plant Operator Selection System (POSS) test and Basic Math and Science Test (BMST)
- —Nuclear unescorted access eligibility
- —One of the following: 1 year of technical experience in power production, petrochemical or industrial process plants (operational, maintenance, design, or training); OR operation and maintenance experience with HVAC, electrical, or maintenance equipment; OR 2 years' experience in operations or maintenance at non-generating nuclear facilities (Navy Nuclear or DOE facility); OR Bachelor's degree in technical discipline (engineering, engineering technology, or related science); OR Associates degree in technical discipline; OR 43+ credit hours of post-secondary education with 75% (at least 32 hours) in advanced math, physics, chemistry, and/or engineering
Location
On-site nuclear power station operation; training class starts January 2027; starting pay $43.71–$48.51/hr depending on experience
