Required qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from an accredited university
- 8+ years direct experience with proven mechanical systems design and testing skills
- 8+ years combined technical leadership role with leading performance of technical scope and/or additional manager responsibilities
- Experience managing a test lab and test team
- Prior experience developing first-of-a-kind test procedures and plans
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Demonstrated experience in oversight of supplier and subcontractor organizations in an engineering environment
- Demonstrated diverse and robust experience in test of complex mechanical components and equipment in high-temperature environments with multi-discipline integration
About this role
Lead the Sodium Test & Fill (TFF) test program for TerraPower's Natrium Demonstration Plant—a high-temperature liquid sodium test facility for next-generation nuclear reactor components. Oversee a diverse team of engineers and contractors conducting qualification testing of first-of-a-kind sodium-cooled fast reactor components, ensuring safe and timely delivery of critical testing deliverables that support regulatory approval and plant commissioning.
Responsibilities
- Own and drive the TFF test program to ensure accurate and complete test plans and procedures are developed to support project timelines
- Lead and coordinate a diverse test engineering team including TerraPower employees, subcontracted resources, partner engineers, and customers
- Support test activities of mechanical equipment and components to the highest levels of safety and reliability with visible, continuous leadership
- Ensure work process execution and technical adequacy comply with contract requirements, project standards, and industry standards (including NQA-1)
- Interface with regulators, stakeholders, and customers on design, fabrication, and regulatory issues
- Coordinate with interfacing project teams to develop cohesive test strategies and ensure accurate hand-offs
- Provide technical direction and oversight of external test supplier activities and manage technical submissions
- Provide engineering review and concurrence of procurement strategy for select commodities
- Support schedule development and monitor team performance against schedule baseline with corrective action management
- Recommend engineering staffing plans and identify staffing changes to meet long-range forecasts
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and indoctrination of new engineers
- Mentor and support employee development through training and challenging assignments
- Recommend obtaining external subject matter experts and specialty resources as needed
- Resolve priority conflicts and escalate unresolved issues to Senior Manager level
Preferred qualifications
- Experience working with high-temperature alkali metals (sodium or potassium)
- Experience working to nuclear quality standards such as ASME NQA-1
- Nuclear design or licensing experience
- Previous experience with nuclear mechanical components, nuclear reactor equipment, or sodium-cooled fast reactor systems
Location, schedule, and travel
Primary location: Bellevue, WA or Everett, WA with regular travel to Kemmerer, WY. Fully remote option available in Kemmerer, WY.
