Required qualifications

Associate's degree, Advanced Post Secondary diploma, or equivalent military experience (E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3). Basic understanding of substation equipment and protection system components; knowledge of testing electromechanical relays and microprocessor-based relay technology; knowledge of IEEE device numbers. Ability to use hand-held multimeters, navigate control drawings and schematics, and recognize electrical hazards. Good organizational, verbal, and written communication skills; basic computer knowledge; self-motivated. 0–1 years relevant experience (T1) or 1–2 years directly related experience (T2); successful completion of System Protection development program steps 1 & 2 or equivalent (T2).

About this role

Join Dominion Energy's System Protection Development Program at Surry Nuclear Station as a Field Operations Technician (T1 or T2). This structured role builds foundational technical skills in installation, maintenance, testing, and troubleshooting of protective relaying and communication systems across substations and nuclear facilities. Work alongside experienced senior technicians on electromechanical and microprocessor-based relay systems, protection equipment commissioning, and station alarm verification.

Responsibilities

  • Install, commission, and verify functionality of protection and control equipment; conduct acceptance testing of voltage and current sensing devices
  • Inspect, clean, maintain, and test protective relays and associated components within regulatory maintenance intervals
  • Perform electromechanical and microprocessor relay repair and troubleshooting; verify engineering protective relay setpoints and logic equations
  • Prepare Pre-Job Briefs, apply electrical tagout clearance boundaries, and execute Human Performance work zone strategies
  • Support on-site nuclear outage activities, network-based protection scheme installation, and construction coordination
  • Complete compliance documentation and apply Cyber Security controls per company standards
  • Perform relay repair and troubleshooting with minimal guidance (T2 role)

Preferred qualifications

Preferred education in Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Electromechanical Technology. Military service experience (E4–E6, W1–W2, or O1–O3). Interest in laboratory-based system protection activities including testing, equipment setup, and troubleshooting.

Location, schedule, and travel

Surry, Virginia. On-site work in substations and field facilities; may support nuclear outage activities and travel to construction sites.
