System Protection Technician T1/T2 (NOVA Region)
About this role
Entry-level System Protection Technician role (T1/T2 levels) within Dominion Energy's structured development program. You'll install, maintain, and troubleshoot protective relaying schemes, communication systems, and operational technology equipment across nuclear and conventional substations, working alongside senior technicians to build foundational skills in protection system design, relay testing, and regulatory compliance.
Responsibilities
- —Work alongside senior team members on installation, maintenance, and corrective actions for protective relaying schemes and OT systems
- —Prepare and participate in Pre-Job Briefs to identify hazards and critical tasks
- —Assist with installation and commissioning of protection and control equipment
- —Verify functionality and communication of protection assets during installation
- —Contribute to verification of station alarms and acceptance testing of voltage and current sensing devices
- —Inspect, clean, and maintain protective relays and associated protection components
- —Participate in electromechanical and microprocessor relay repair and troubleshooting
- —Maintain and test protection systems within defined maintenance intervals per regulatory requirements
- —Complete compliance paperwork and supporting documentation
- —Apply Cyber Security controls per Dominion Energy standards
- —Properly apply electrical clearance boundary (tagout) and Human Performance work zone strategies
- —Coordinate with project stakeholders during construction activities
- —Verify primary equipment operates per manufacturer specifications
- —Conduct acceptance testing of voltage and current sensing devices
- —Verify engineering protective relay setpoints and logic equations
- —Support on-site ET organization during nuclear outages as needed
Qualifications
- —For T1: 0–1 years of relevant experience; Associate's degree, Advanced Post Secondary diploma, or equivalent military experience (E3–E5, W1–W2, or O1–O3 with appropriate equivalent education/experience)
- —For T2: 1–2 years of directly related experience; successful completion of System Protection development program steps 1 & 2 or equivalent
- —Basic understanding of substation equipment and protection system components
- —Knowledge of electromechanical relay testing, microprocessor-based relay technology, logic diagrams, and IEEE device numbers
- —Ability to use hand-held multimeters and navigate control drawings, schematics, and equipment nameplates
- —Ability to recognize electrical hazards
- —Good verbal and written communication skills
- —Computer knowledge
- —Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
Desired
- —Associate's degree or Advanced Post Secondary diploma in Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Electromechanical disciplines
- —Military service (E4–E6, W1–W2, or O1–O3 ranks with appropriate equivalent education/experience)
