System Protection Technician T1/T2 (Eastern Region)

Join Dominion Energy's System Protection Development Program as a Field Operations Technician (T1 or T2) in the Eastern Region. This structured career-track role builds foundational technical competence through hands-on experience with protective relays, communication systems, and SCADA equipment across nuclear and transmission substations. You'll work on installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of protection systems that serve as the last line of defense before equipment energization, with potential nuclear outage support.
Responsibilities
- —Work alongside senior technicians to gain practical experience with protection and control equipment in substations
- —Prepare and participate in Pre-Job Briefs to identify hazards and critical tasks; apply electrical clearance boundary (tagout) and Human Performance work zone strategies
- —Assist with installation and commissioning of protection and control equipment; verify functionality and communication of protection assets
- —Inspect, clean, and maintain protective relays and associated protection components per regulatory maintenance intervals
- —Participate in electromechanical and microprocessor relay repair, troubleshooting, and testing activities
- —Verify engineering protective relay setpoints, logic equations, and station alarms; confirm primary equipment operates to manufacturer specifications
- —Complete compliance paperwork, supporting documentation, and apply Cyber Security controls per Dominion Energy standards
- —Support on-site activities during nuclear outages as needed; coordinate with project stakeholders during construction activities
Qualifications
- —Associate's degree, Advanced Post Secondary diploma, or military experience (E3-E5, W1-W2, or O1-O3 ranks)
- —For T1: 0–1 years of relevant experience; basic understanding of substation equipment and protection system components
- —For T2: 1–2 years of directly related experience; successful completion of T1 development program steps or equivalent
- —Knowledge of electromechanical relay testing and microprocessor-based relay technology
- —Familiarity with IEEE device numbers, logic diagrams, and variable equations
- —Ability to use hand-held multimeters and navigate control drawings and schematics
- —Ability to recognize electrical hazards and apply proper safety protocols
- —Organizational, self-motivated work approach; good verbal and written communication skills; basic computer knowledge
Desired
- —Degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology, or Electromechanical disciplines
- —Military service background (E4–E6, W1–W2, or O1–O3 ranks with equivalent education/experience)
- —Knowledge of company commissioning practices and acceptance testing criteria
- —Proficient computer skills beyond basic level
Location
Eastern Region; field-based work at Dominion Energy substations; may require on-site support during nuclear outages
