Senior Electrical Engineer – Project Management and Construction Florida
About this role
Senior-level electrical engineer supporting Duke Energy's Project Management and Construction group in designing and building new power generation assets including solar, battery storage, gas, and advanced nuclear facilities. This role manages engineering oversight across all project phases—from development through commissioning—with minimal supervision, requiring independent problem-solving and technical leadership on utility-scale projects.
Responsibilities
- —Support development phase of major project scope and EPC bid package documentation
- —Support interconnection design and agreements for development-stage projects; ensure contract documentation aligns with interconnection scope
- —Support cost estimates, schedules, risk analyses, bid evaluations, and contract development
- —Provide engineering oversight to ensure compliance with project requirements, design criteria, Duke Energy standards, and industry standards
- —Participate in design reviews, drawing reviews, construction support, technical RFI resolution, commissioning support, performance testing, and warranty support
- —Provide on-site engineering support for construction and commissioning of projects
- —Prepare technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches; conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements
- —Conduct and review power system studies to ensure accuracy with industry standards and project requirements
- —Assist in accomplishing business goals through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities
- —Stay current with new developments, technologies, procedures, standards, and equipment in assigned areas
Qualifications
- —Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (or state registration as a Professional Engineer; Master's degree in engineering may substitute for B.S.)
- —Minimum 6 years of engineering experience (without PE certification) or 5 years of engineering experience (with PE certification)
Desired
- —Familiarity with transmission-interconnected renewable resources
- —Understanding of applicable NERC regulations (PRC-006, PRC-012, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-027, PRC-028, PRC-029, PRC-030, CIP-002, CIP-010)
- —Familiarity with specifications for major electrical equipment (large power transformers, LV/MV cables, switchgear, protective relaying devices)
- —Experience in power systems modeling using ETAP or SKM
- —Experience with design and construction of electrical power systems
- —Experience developing AC and DC schematics for protective relaying systems
- —Knowledge of relay settings calculations for protective relays associated with Inverter-Based Resources
- —Familiarity with project management principles in the utility industry
- —Understanding of industry standards including NESC and NFPA 70
Location
Hybrid model with 2–3 days per week on-site or at project sites. Preferred base location: St. Petersburg, FL; other Florida locations may be considered. 15–25% travel required. Occasional mildly strenuous physical activity (walking on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs/ladders); required to wear PPE (hardhat, safety glasses, earplugs). May support projects in Midwest and Carolinas regions.
