Senior Civil Structural Design Engineer
About this role
Kairos Power, a leading advanced reactor developer, seeks a Senior Civil Structural Design Engineer to lead structural design and multi-disciplinary integration for its Generation IV fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) facilities. You will coordinate design across all engineering disciplines, resolve technical clashes, mentor junior engineers, and ensure full compliance with nuclear regulatory standards and building codes. This is a senior technical leadership role critical to the successful deployment of next-generation nuclear energy technology.
Responsibilities
- —Lead structural design and analysis for FHR reactor facilities, ensuring compliance with NRC requirements, ASME codes, and relevant building standards (ASCE, ACI, AISC, IBC)
- —Facilitate multi-disciplinary interface meetings with internal teams, architects, MEP consultants, contractors, and clients; maintain and track comprehensive interface registers
- —Perform complex structural analysis using industry software (SAP2000, ETABS, RISA) and resolve BIM clashes using Revit/Navisworks
- —Review and approve design drawings, specifications, and submittals across disciplines; ensure compatibility with structural systems and nuclear safety requirements
- —Lead resolution of technical conflicts between structural, architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design elements
- —Prepare detailed engineering calculations, technical reports, and construction documents for nuclear facilities
- —Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers in structural design, interface management, and nuclear project best practices
- —Serve as primary liaison between civil/structural team and project stakeholders; communicate complex technical solutions to technical and non-technical audiences
- —Build collaborative relationships with project partners to maintain integrated project environment
Qualifications
- —Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with structural emphasis
- —Minimum 5+ years progressive experience in civil/structural engineering, with at least 2 years in senior role on large-scale, multidisciplinary projects
- —In-depth knowledge of design codes and standards (ASCE, ACI, AISC, IBC, and familiarity with nuclear design standards preferred)
- —Proficiency with structural analysis/design software (SAP2000, ETABS, RISA) and BIM platforms (Revit, Navisworks)
- —Strong understanding of MEP system spatial, routing, and load implications on structural design
- —Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills
- —Ability to work effectively in collaborative, multidisciplinary team environments
Desired
- —Master of Science in Structural Engineering
- —Professional Engineer (PE) license in California or Tennessee
- —Structural Engineer (SE) license
- —Experience with nuclear or advanced reactor projects
Location
Onsite at Kairos Power headquarters in Alameda, CA. 10% travel required. May involve fieldwork on reactor sites requiring ability to traverse ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and lifts; prolonged standing/sitting in office and field environments; occasional extended hours and weekends.
