About this role

Radiation Protection Technician at a commercial nuclear power plant supporting plant operations and maintenance through radiation surveys, personnel exposure monitoring, radioactive material management, and NRC/ALARA compliance. Core duties include contamination control, survey equipment operation, shielding installation, and emergency response coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and evaluate radiation, airborne radioactivity, and contamination surveys to determine protection requirements and personnel stay time
  • Monitor and control personnel exposure to airborne radioactivity and radiation, maintaining ALARA standards
  • Prescribe required protective clothing and devices for entries into controlled areas
  • Control and reduce quantities of radioactive materials using physical techniques and administrative procedures
  • Operate, calibrate, repair, and maintain radiological survey equipment and respiratory test equipment
  • Prepare radioactive material for disposal and survey controlled area material per approved procedures prior to unrestricted release
  • Install and certify shielding, ventilation, and radiological containment devices at work sites
  • Direct, perform, or assist in decontamination of personnel and equipment
  • Assist in training of plant and supplemental personnel
  • Perform Shift Radiation Protection Technician duties per REG Emergency Response Plan requirements and serve on Emergency Response Organization when called

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required. Associate's degree in Radiation Protection, Health Physics, or related field OR 5+ years of experience in radiation control, radioactive waste management, and respiratory protection program implementation. Must meet ANSI requirements, pass Company and NRC psychological/drug/alcohol/medical testing, complete EEI Technicians test, wear respirator, work with 20-pound weight on back, meet unescorted access requirements, be available for on-call status, pass National Registry Radiation Protection Technologists Exam within 3 years of employment, and maintain regular attendance.

Successful completion of Initial Training and/or Watch Station Qualifications.

Location

Rotating shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays; on-call status required. Work environment includes outdoor conditions, climbing ladders and platforms, exposure to heat, dirt, noise, and radiation.
