Required qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Technical/scientific background: two years college-level science, junior college degree in science, vocational technical certificate, equivalent mechanical/technical work experience, prior nuclear operations experience, or relevant military training
- Pass NRC access authorization requirements
- Pass EEI POSS/MASS exam at nuclear level (or be grandfathered)
- Pass medical examination meeting NRC health and physical requirements
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and wear respirator/SCBA equipment
- Obtain Minnesota Special Engineer's License within 3 months
- Obtain Second-Class Grade 'A' License within 3 months of attaining necessary operating experience
About this role
Nuclear Plant Attendant Apprentice at Prairie Island Nuclear Plant (Xcel Energy). This is a structured apprenticeship program where you'll gain hands-on experience in nuclear plant operations—including refueling, equipment maintenance, and surveillance testing—while working toward your NRC Reactor Operator or Senior Reactor Operator license. Wage range: $30.39–$46.86/hour upon program completion.
Responsibilities
- Perform core plant operations including refueling, equipment isolations/restorations, and surveillance testing
- Conduct equipment and valve checks and maintain detailed operational records per plant procedures
- Serve as an active member of the on-site fire brigade
- Participate in structured training and retraining programs to meet NRC licensing requirements
Location, schedule, and travel
Prairie Island Nuclear Plant, Welch, MN; on-site; shift work required; must be physically capable of climbing ladders and working at heights.
