About this role
Nuclear fuels engineering role at Xcel Energy supporting BWR plant operations through reload core design, licensing analyses, and in-core fuel management. This position involves technical problem-solving, mentoring, and on-site plant support for a major US nuclear utility.
Responsibilities
- —Perform reload core/bundle design, reload licensing, in-core fuel management, and analyses supporting fuel reliability and performance
- —Coordinate engineering assignments for cycle reload projects, including fuel and core design, licensing analyses, license amendment preparation, and Startup Physics analyses
- —Provide on-site support for fuel inspections, fuel and control blade manufacturing oversight, and special studies
- —Review and approve design work completed by contractors and other engineers; serve as key interface with internal and external groups
- —Apply sound engineering principles to provide technically correct, timely, and cost-effective recommendations
- —Communicate technical and complex nuclear fuel topics orally and in writing to all management levels
- —Collaborate with management to define issues, develop improvement plans, and recommend corrective actions
- —Work effectively as a team member, team leader, and mentor
- —Participate in emergency response organization, refueling outages, irradiated fuel inspections, fuel maintenance, and vendor oversight activities
- —Understand and practice company safety and industrial hygiene policies during core verification and manufacturing oversight
- —Recommend changes to procedures, analysis methods, design, or equipment based on engineering assessment
Qualifications
- —Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering or related technical field from ABET-accredited institution
- —Ability to obtain and maintain qualifications for unescorted access to Xcel Energy nuclear power plants
- —Required to maintain nuclear fitness for duty during off-hours if on call or designated emergency response duty
- —Experience requirements vary by level: Engineer I (0–2 years); Engineer II (2 years); Engineer (6 years in nuclear plant operations/maintenance or equivalent power plant/industrial/naval/OEM experience); Senior Engineer (8+ years with demonstrated expertise in nuclear generating plants and at least one engineering discipline area)

- —Professional Engineer (PE) license
- —Advanced degree in engineering or related technical field
Location
Corporate office in Minneapolis, MN; position requires relocation to live within 60 or 90 minutes of assigned BWR nuclear generation station. On-site refueling outage support and emergency response duties required; may require assuming emergency response duties and maintaining on-call status.
