About this role

Nuclear Engineer III/Senior Nuclear Engineer position in Duke Energy's Safety Analysis Applications group. Develop and execute thermal hydraulic methodologies for PWR fleet containment response analysis during transients and accidents. Support power uprates, fuel cycle transitions, and NRC-regulated safety analyses. Candidates must have 4–6 years of engineering experience (Nuclear Engineer III) or 6+ years (Senior), with minimum 1 year in nuclear roles.

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex transient thermal hydraulic simulations and analysis for all PWR Duke Energy reactors, including emergent plant support
  • Perform analyses to determine containment temperature and pressure response to postulated pipe breaks using NRC-approved codes and plant models
  • Develop, qualify, and maintain computer codes used in safety analysis
  • Prepare thorough and accurate calculation files, technical reports, and correspondence
  • Collaborate with internal, industry, vendor, and regulatory personnel on safety analysis methodologies
  • Work with Regulatory Compliance to create and/or review Licensing Amendment Request (LAR) packages and 50.59 Evaluations
  • Follow NRC-approved methodologies to perform reload and containment analyses
  • Participate in technical training and assist in licensing improved Safety Analysis methods

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET-accredited program (Master's degree in engineering may be substituted). For Nuclear Engineer III: 4–6 years of engineering experience with minimum 1 year of nuclear experience. For Senior Nuclear Engineer: Minimum 6 years of engineering experience (or 5 years with Professional Engineer state registration) with minimum 1 year of nuclear experience.

Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET-accredited program; Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate and/or Professional Engineer (PE) license; experience with safety analysis codes (RETRAN, RELAP, GOTHIC, or equivalents); PWR safety analysis and nuclear fuel experience; familiarity with Westinghouse or B&W NSSS reactor systems; experience developing and supporting License Amendment Requests and 50.59 Evaluations; Unix/Linux workstation experience; computer programming experience (FORTRAN, Python, VBA, or equivalent); knowledge of thermal hydraulic calculations including heat transfer, flow modeling, single failure analysis, and NPSH analysis.

Location

Hybrid office/remote work environment (typically four 10-hour days: 2 in office, 2 remote) with flexible scheduling. Based in Charlotte, NC area with flexibility to work from Duke Energy nuclear sites near Lake Norman, NC or Lake Wylie, SC. Some travel to other Duke Energy sites, industry sites, and conferences. Occasional off-hour emergent work required.
