Required qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related discipline
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering principles from academic coursework, laboratory experience, research, or prior internships
  • Understanding of engineering fundamentals including mechanics, materials, manufacturing processes, machine design, thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, engineering standards, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Basic proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks or AutoCAD) and engineering analysis tools (ANSYS, MATLAB, or similar)
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and critical thinking ability
  • Team player with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
  • Prioritizes safety of self and others

About this role

Kairos Power, a leader in fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) technology, seeks mechanical engineering students for Summer 2027 internships. Interns will contribute to real technical projects across engineering test, manufacturing engineering, mechanical design, reliability engineering, systems integration, and quality engineering teams supporting advanced nuclear energy solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in design, analysis, testing, and optimization of mechanical systems, components, and manufacturing processes
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (engineers, technicians, project managers) on engineering projects and program objectives
  • Conduct experiments, collect data, and perform engineering analyses to validate designs and inform technical decisions
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), engineering documentation, technical reports, and design drawings
  • Contribute to development and optimization of manufacturing processes, equipment, and production methods
  • Participate in troubleshooting and root cause investigations to resolve engineering and manufacturing challenges
  • Support fabrication, assembly, commissioning, and testing of prototypes
  • Participate in engineering design reviews and multidisciplinary technical discussions
  • Assist with inspections, quality checks, testing, and documentation to ensure compliance with engineering standards
  • Support reliability engineering activities by evaluating failure modes and recommending improvements
  • Prepare and deliver presentations on project objectives, technical work, and results

Preferred qualifications

  • Demonstrated technical skills through laboratory work, research, extracurricular projects, or prior internship/work experience
  • Familiarity with prototyping, fabrication, manufacturing, or engineering testing equipment
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, quality control principles, and engineering testing methodologies
  • Ability to identify and create efficiencies when solving problems and challenges
