Required qualifications
High School Diploma or GED; Associate degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Instrumentation Controls OR 4 years applicable experience OR completion of AEP Apprentice progression. Prior job experience in steel mills, paper mills, nuclear, nuclear navy, chemical, oil refinery, or power plants. Valid state driver's license. Successful completion of Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test. Ability to work rotating shifts (including weekends, nights, holidays), confined spaces, elevated areas, varying temperatures, and wear respirator when required. Ability to read and interpret prints and specifications.
About this role
3rd-year apprentice instrument technician role at AEP power plants. Perform skilled repair and maintenance of control systems, instruments, and electronic devices under journeyman supervision. Work with PLCs, DCS systems, and plant instrumentation to troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic components. Support engineering studies and continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and repair defects in control systems (electrical, solid-state electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic) using wiring diagrams, schematics, and control diagrams
- Install, calibrate, and maintain control loops; demonstrate working knowledge of PLC and DCS control systems
- Perform functions to place instrument and control systems in/out of service for study, tests, and adjustments
- Set up and connect test devices for boilers, turbines, generators, and power plant equipment
- Operate and maintain equipment to obtain temperatures, levels, pressures, and flows; analyze data and calculate test results
- Compile, record, and prepare graphs, curves, and reports for tests and investigations
- Respond to callouts for outage and non-outage work; train for fire fighting, first aid, AED, and emergency response
Location, schedule, and travel
Rotating shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays. Daily inspection of remote equipment. Must respond to callouts for outage and non-outage work. Must work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and hot/cold temperature environments.
