Required qualifications
High school diploma or GED required. Experience requirement: 4 years applicable machinist experience in steel mills, paper mills, nuclear, nuclear navy, chemical, oil refinery, power plant, or machine shop (reduced to 3 years with Associate degree or 18-month Certificate of Completion). Completion of AEP CMF Machinist 2nd year apprenticeship progression. Valid state driver's license. Successful completion of Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS) test. Ability to read/interpret prints and specifications, work rotating shifts including nights/weekends/holidays, respond to maintenance callouts, work in confined spaces and elevated areas, wear respirator when required.
About this role
3rd-year CMF Machinist position at AEP supporting power plant maintenance and equipment rebuilding. This is an advancement role within the machinist career track, focusing on precision repair, fabrication, and maintenance of mechanical systems critical to plant operations.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, repair, overhaul, and maintain mechanical equipment in power plants
- Operate machine shop equipment (lathes, shapers, drill presses, milling machines, boring bars) to precision tolerances of ±0.001"
- Program and operate CNC machine tools
- Develop jigs, fixtures, and perform precision fitting of component parts
- Perform electric arc and oxyacetylene welding, cutting, heating, and brazing of piping and structural components
- Operate material handling equipment including forklifts and overhead cranes
- Erect/remove scaffolding and perform rigging, lifting, and blocking operations
- Create and maintain detailed documentation of repairs and work performed
- Respond to emergency callouts for outage and non-outage support
- Participate in emergency response plan training and assignments
Preferred qualifications
Associate degree or certificate of completion in machine shop practice
Location, schedule, and travel
Rotating shifts including weekends, nights, and holidays. Minimal long-distance travel with daily remote equipment inspection. Medium physical work including occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Work in confined spaces, elevated areas, and variable temperature environments.
