Required qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent; three years fabrication experience OR one year as Westinghouse Newington Fabrication Mechanic II. Proficient reading engineering drawings, weld symbols, and blueprints. Qualified in all welding positions for carbon and stainless steel (minimum 2 processes). Demonstrated experience with plasma cutting, carbon arc, oxy-acetylene cutting, and grinding of specified materials.
About this role
Fabrication Mechanic A at Westinghouse Newington facility fabricating and welding metal components for nuclear equipment. ASME-qualified role on 3rd shift, 100% onsite. Responsibilities include precision welding (SMAW, GTAW), fitting, grinding, and final packing of large-scale reactor vessel and component assemblies.
Responsibilities
- Weld, fit, and fabricate metal components per blueprints and engineering drawings using SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) and GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) processes
- Perform interior and exterior seam welding on large metal components; grind welds per engineering specifications
- Grind interior surfaces of large metal forgings and prepare for stainless steel coating
- Set up and monitor automated welding equipment for seam production on complex geometries
- Layout, fit, and measure cylinders, plates, and cones to precise drawing and angular specifications
- Perform thermal cutting (plasma, carbon arc, oxy-acetylene) and deburring of fabricated surfaces
- Conduct testing functions per engineering specifications and quality requirements
- Wrap, pad, label, and ship completed components with proper identification and packing materials
