Engineer (Transmission Operations)
About this role
Engineer (Transmission Operations) at Ameren coordinates special projects with transmission operations supervisors and dispatchers to maintain system integrity and safe operation across Ameren's 8,000+ transmission miles. This role operates within FERC and NERC standards to enhance reliability, improve system performance, and support diverse generation access across multiple energy markets, including coordination with nuclear plant transmission systems.
Responsibilities
- —Coordinate with Transmission Operations Supervisor (TOS) in operating equipment under Jurisdictional and Functional Control of Transmission Operations
- —Review transmission switching strategies, including EHV switching techniques, system load and generation protection, and dispatcher switching allocation
- —Confirm next-day transmission outages, arrange switching personnel, and ensure Worker's Protection Assurance (WPA) is set up correctly
- —Coordinate company operations with ERRIS, NERC, Regional Reliability Entities (SERC), and Ameren's Reliability Coordinator (MISO)
- —Schedule short-term equipment outages and determine restoration procedures based on system capacity needs and efficiency
- —Perform technical system studies using digital computers, load flow analysis, and other system analysis tools
- —Coordinate repairs on defective transmission equipment
- —Coordinate nuclear plant transmission outages and changes to NPOA/NPIR agreements
- —Update and review Ameren procedures regarding NERC standards compliance
- —Create documentation for NERC standards compliance evidence with Sr. Transmission Technical Advisor
- —Review, update, and create training lessons for TOS and Transmission Dispatchers on internal processes and software
- —Evaluate system alarms and events to identify issues and notify the TOS
- —Identify issues requiring expert analysis from System Relay Services, Transmission Maintenance, and Substation Maintenance; coordinate responses
- —Monitor EMS/SCADA system for proper operation
Qualifications
- —Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited college or university (Electrical Engineering preferred)
- —Ability to obtain NERC System Operator Certification within one year of hire
- —Ability to successfully pass NERC Cyber Security Background Check
- —Project engineering experience
- —Excellent oral and written communications skills and computer proficiency
- —Knowledge of generation methods, equipment, and transmission systems/equipment
- —Demonstrated ability to use computers and analytical methods to analyze operational problems
- —Competency in transmission-specific computer applications
Desired
- —Relevant engineering experience in power engineering (transmission, generation, and/or distribution systems)
- —Knowledge of MISO (Midcontinent ISO) operational reliability practices and SERC (NERC regional reliability entity) supplements
- —Working knowledge of MISO's real-time and next-day energy markets and market-related operations
- —Knowledge of interconnected system operations, emergency operations, restoration procedures, operating reserve requirements, voltage and VAR control, and power flows
- —Knowledge of EMS/SCADA and/or industrial control systems and processes
- —Ability to work effectively with conflicting priorities and stressful situations in a team-oriented environment
