Site Design Engineering Manager
About this role
Lead the onsite engineering design team for TerraPower's Natrium Demonstration Project, an advanced sodium-cooled fast reactor under construction near Kemmerer, Wyoming. This role oversees multidisciplinary engineers (civil, mechanical, electrical) ensuring alignment between design, construction, testing, startup, and regulatory compliance with the NRC.
Responsibilities
- —Lead coordination and oversight of multidisciplinary onsite engineering team (civil, mechanical, electrical engineers) comprising TerraPower employees and subcontracted resources
- —Develop and recommend engineering staffing plans based on project management input, team skillset analysis, construction schedule demands, and long-range forecasts
- —Oversee execution of design follow-on and field engineering activities supporting construction, testing, system startup, commissioning, and turnover to operations
- —Perform technical review, approval, and issuance of drawing and design deliverables ensuring conformance to approved design basis, licensing commitments, and regulatory requirements
- —Serve as primary onsite engineering interface with stakeholders including construction management, field engineering teams, licensing and regulatory affairs, quality assurance, utility owner/operator, procurement, suppliers, and external regulators (NRC)
- —Resolve technical and engineering issues arising in the field efficiently and collaboratively
- —Manage priority conflicts and resource allocation when competing demands emerge; escalate unresolved or high-impact conflicts to senior leadership
- —Foster employee development through mentoring engineers, identifying training opportunities, and assigning growth-oriented tasks
- —Support recruitment, onboarding, and indoctrination processes for new onsite engineers aligned with project standards and site-specific safety and security protocols
- —Ensure all work processes, technical outputs, and deliverables adhere to contract requirements, TerraPower project standards, industry standards (ASME, IEEE, ACI), and nuclear regulatory expectations
- —Manage performance, goal setting, coaching, succession planning, and employee development of direct reports
- —May oversee team leads or subordinate supervisors depending on organizational structure
Qualifications
- —Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, or related discipline) from an accredited institution
- —Minimum 10–15 years of progressive engineering experience
- —At least 5–7 years in a leadership or supervisory role managing multidisciplinary engineering teams
- —Significant experience in nuclear facility design, construction support, or field engineering, preferably on large-scale nuclear new-build, demonstration, or advanced reactor projects
- —Proven track record of interfacing with construction, procurement, quality, licensing, and regulatory entities to resolve complex onsite technical issues
- —Strong understanding of nuclear design and licensing requirements
Desired
- —Advanced degree in Engineering or related discipline
- —Professional engineering registration (PE)
- —Familiarity with sodium-cooled fast reactor technology, advanced nuclear systems, or DOE-funded demonstration projects
