Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 10–15 years of progressive engineering experience with at least 5–7 years in a leadership or supervisory role leading engineering teams
  • Significant experience in nuclear facility design, construction support, or field engineering on large-scale nuclear new-build, demonstration, or advanced reactor projects
  • Proven track record interfacing with construction, procurement, quality, licensing, and regulatory entities to resolve complex onsite technical issues
  • Strong understanding of nuclear design and licensing basis requirements, configuration management, and quality assurance programs in regulated nuclear environments
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills with experience mentoring engineers
  • Ability to obtain and maintain site access and required security clearances for a nuclear construction site
  • Familiarity with nuclear construction codes: NQA-1, ASME Section III, VIII, B31.1, B31.3, ACI-349, 318, AISC N690, 360, IEEE 603

About this role

Lead the onsite civil engineering team for TerraPower's Natrium Demonstration Project, a sodium-cooled fast reactor under construction in Wyoming. Oversee design, field engineering, and construction support while ensuring compliance with nuclear safety standards, NRC regulatory requirements, and quality assurance programs.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the onsite civil engineering team comprising TerraPower employees and subcontracted resources
  • Oversee execution of civil/structural design, field engineering, and technical review activities in support of construction, testing, commissioning, and operations turnover
  • Review, approve, and issue drawing and design deliverables to ensure conformance with approved design basis, licensing commitments, and regulatory requirements
  • Serve as primary onsite engineering interface for civil/structural issues with construction management, field engineering, licensing, quality assurance, utility operators, procurement, suppliers, and NRC regulators
  • Resolve technical and engineering issues arising in the field efficiently and collaboratively
  • Manage priority conflicts and resource allocation across competing engineering demands; escalate high-impact issues to senior leadership
  • Support project controls, field engineering, and construction teams to prioritize work activities aligned with construction schedule
  • Mentor engineers, identify training opportunities, and assign growth-oriented tasks to foster employee development
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and indoctrination of new engineers; ensure alignment with project standards, nuclear quality programs, and site safety/security protocols
  • Ensure all work processes, technical outputs, and deliverables adhere to contract requirements, TerraPower standards, industry standards, and nuclear regulatory expectations

Preferred qualifications

  • Advanced degree or professional engineering registration (PE)
  • Familiarity with sodium-cooled fast reactor technology, advanced nuclear systems, or DOE-funded demonstration projects

Location, schedule, and travel

Onsite at Natrium Demonstration Project, Kemmerer, Wyoming; reports to Site Design Engineering Manager.
