About this role

Kairos Power seeks a Senior Mill-Turn Machinist to program and operate CNC mill-turn machines and multi-axis equipment for precision nuclear reactor components. You'll develop NC programs, set up complex fixturing, and deliver tight-tolerance parts that meet engineering specifications for the company's Fluoride Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor program.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret blueprints and 3D models to develop NC programs, design fixturing, and plan machining sequences
  • Perform multi-axis CNC programming using industry CAD/CAM software such as MasterCam
  • Set up, operate, and program CNC machines for a wide range of component sizes and complex geometries
  • Create safe workholding methods and establish work coordinates and tooling strategies before machining
  • Select appropriate jaws or create custom workholding using hydraulic chucks on main and sub spindles
  • Monitor machine operations, interpret G and M codes, and verify workpiece accuracy to specifications
  • Operate shop equipment including band saws, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments
  • Execute rigging and material movement of large (>1,000 lb) machined parts following safety protocols
  • Perform precision machining on parts within multi-process assemblies, including post-weld, post-roll, and post-form components
  • Identify and resolve machining challenges independently and provide technical assistance to others
  • Maintain compliance with internal quality standards and utilize job scheduling software for production tracking
  • Complete and maintain accurate job travelers and first article inspection reports for documentation and traceability
  • Maintain a clean, organized work environment with proper material and tooling inventory management

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of relevant machining experience including mill, lathe, 3-axis, 5-axis, and live-tooling operations
  • Experience rigging and setting up large machined parts with lift plan support
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering and assembly drawings
  • Proficient CAM software programming (MasterCam preferred)
  • Knowledge of G-Code and CAM-CAD software
  • Understanding of basic and advanced GD&T including tolerancing, flatness, parallelism, thread and profile tolerances
  • Knowledge of CNC cutting tool selection, surface footage, and chip load feed rates
  • Ability to use precision measuring tools (Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gages, gauge blocks, thread gauges)
  • Ability to apply shop mathematics to practical situations
  • Strong problem-solving and independent decision-making skills
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Proficiency with computers and company-specific software systems
  • Ability to work collaboratively and prioritize safety for self and others

Desired

  • Experience in mill-turn environments using MasterCam
  • Experience with live centers or steady rests on long parts
  • Experience with Okuma Multus, DMG Mori NTX, or Mazak Integrex machines
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar CAD platforms
  • Willingness to provide mentorship and technical guidance to other machinists
  • Ability to present technical information effectively to groups

Location

Physical demands include ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding and lifts; setting up temporary structures; and moving in different positions throughout the shift.
