Senior Mill-Turn Machinist
About this role
Kairos Power seeks a Senior Mill-Turn Machinist to program and operate CNC mill-turn machines and multi-axis equipment for precision nuclear reactor components. You'll develop NC programs, set up complex fixturing, and deliver tight-tolerance parts that meet engineering specifications for the company's Fluoride Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor program.
Responsibilities
- —Interpret blueprints and 3D models to develop NC programs, design fixturing, and plan machining sequences
- —Perform multi-axis CNC programming using industry CAD/CAM software such as MasterCam
- —Set up, operate, and program CNC machines for a wide range of component sizes and complex geometries
- —Create safe workholding methods and establish work coordinates and tooling strategies before machining
- —Select appropriate jaws or create custom workholding using hydraulic chucks on main and sub spindles
- —Monitor machine operations, interpret G and M codes, and verify workpiece accuracy to specifications
- —Operate shop equipment including band saws, hand tools, and precision measuring instruments
- —Execute rigging and material movement of large (>1,000 lb) machined parts following safety protocols
- —Perform precision machining on parts within multi-process assemblies, including post-weld, post-roll, and post-form components
- —Identify and resolve machining challenges independently and provide technical assistance to others
- —Maintain compliance with internal quality standards and utilize job scheduling software for production tracking
- —Complete and maintain accurate job travelers and first article inspection reports for documentation and traceability
- —Maintain a clean, organized work environment with proper material and tooling inventory management
Qualifications
- —High school diploma or GED
- —5+ years of relevant machining experience including mill, lathe, 3-axis, 5-axis, and live-tooling operations
- —Experience rigging and setting up large machined parts with lift plan support
- —Ability to read and interpret engineering and assembly drawings
- —Proficient CAM software programming (MasterCam preferred)
- —Knowledge of G-Code and CAM-CAD software
- —Understanding of basic and advanced GD&T including tolerancing, flatness, parallelism, thread and profile tolerances
- —Knowledge of CNC cutting tool selection, surface footage, and chip load feed rates
- —Ability to use precision measuring tools (Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gages, gauge blocks, thread gauges)
- —Ability to apply shop mathematics to practical situations
- —Strong problem-solving and independent decision-making skills
- —Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals
- —Proficiency with computers and company-specific software systems
- —Ability to work collaboratively and prioritize safety for self and others
Desired
- —Experience in mill-turn environments using MasterCam
- —Experience with live centers or steady rests on long parts
- —Experience with Okuma Multus, DMG Mori NTX, or Mazak Integrex machines
- —Familiarity with SolidWorks or similar CAD platforms
- —Willingness to provide mentorship and technical guidance to other machinists
- —Ability to present technical information effectively to groups
Location
Physical demands include ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding and lifts; setting up temporary structures; and moving in different positions throughout the shift.
