Machinist III
About this role
Kairos Power, a advanced nuclear reactor developer, seeks a Machinist III to design, program, and operate precision multi-axis machine tools (lathes, mills, boring machines, grinders) for manufacturing critical nuclear reactor components and assemblies. You'll interpret engineering blueprints, develop NC programs, perform in-process quality inspections, and ensure all machined parts meet strict nuclear industry tolerances and specifications.
Responsibilities
- —Read engineering blueprints and job orders to determine product specifications, dimensions, tolerances, tooling instructions, and sequence of operations
- —Establish work coordinate systems and tooling offsets for multi-axis machines
- —Create work holding methods and plans for all machine operations
- —Position and secure workpieces in holding devices, machine tables, chucks, centers, or fixtures
- —Set up and operate CNC machines (mills, lathes, boring machines, grinders) with 3-axis, 5-axis, and live-tooling capabilities
- —Monitor machine operations and verify conformance of machined workpieces to specifications using precision measuring tools
- —Create and edit NC programs using CAM software (MasterCam)
- —Maintain compliance with internal quality standards and nuclear-grade documentation requirements
- —Complete and maintain accurate job travelers, first article inspection reports, and quality documentation
Qualifications
- —High school diploma or GED
- —5+ years of hands-on machining experience including mill, lathe, 3-axis, 5-axis, and live-tooling operations
- —Proficiency with CAM-CAD software and G-Code programming
- —Ability to create and edit machining programs using CAM software (Mastercam preferred)
- —Advanced understanding of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing): flatness, parallelism, thread tolerances, profile tolerances, perpendicularity
- —Competency with shop mathematics and precision measurement tools (Vernier calipers, micrometers, height gauges, gauge pins, gauge blocks, thread gauges)
- —Knowledge of CNC cutting tool selection, surface footage, and chip load feed rates
- —Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
- —Proficiency with computers and company-specific software (timekeeping, training platforms, work order systems)
- —Ability to work collaboratively and solve problems quickly
- —Strong commitment to safety and quality in a manufacturing environment
Desired
- —Experience with Solidworks or equivalent CAD software
- —Forklift and boom lift certification
- —Prior experience in nuclear, aerospace, or highly regulated manufacturing sectors
Location
Onsite in Richmond, CA and Alameda, CA (headquarters). Schedule includes occasional 2nd shift (4:30pm start), overtime, and weekend work with flexibility required. Physical demands: standing/sitting for prolonged periods, moving objects up to 25 lbs, operating machinery and hand tools in a noisy environment with potential chemical odors/fumes. Required PPE: face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes.
