About this role
Reactor Engineer position at Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, a dual-unit Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) site in Pennsylvania operated by Talen Energy. This role focuses on on-site nuclear fuel management, reactivity management, and core operations. The position is open to recent graduates and experienced engineers at Support, Senior, or Principal levels, with career progression opportunities based on experience and credentials.
Responsibilities
- —Provide technical guidance and recommendations to Operations regarding reactivity changes and power maneuvers
- —Prepare power maneuvering schedules based on fuel performance, Technical Specification thermal limit margins, and vendor preconditioning guidelines
- —Operate the Traversing In-core Probe (TIP) system for calibration of in-core neutron detectors
- —Coordinate and provide technical support for new fuel receipt and inspection activities
- —Plan core refueling activities, including fuel, neutron instrumentation, and control blade replacements
- —Ensure NRC requirements for receipt, transfer, inventory, and reporting of Special Nuclear Materials (SNM) are met
- —Perform startup physics testing and administer/operate the Powerplex core monitoring system
- —Review future fuel and core design changes for plant operational impacts and safety implications
- —Serve as subject matter expert in reactivity management, fuel performance, and core operations
- —Perform duties of Core Thermal Hydraulics Engineer during station emergencies
- —Maintain awareness of safety rules and environmental hazards; ensure safety of personnel, public, and environment
- —Obtain and maintain SSES plant security clearance
Qualifications
- —Bachelor's Degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Nuclear Engineering from ABET-accredited college or university
- —Strong work management and communication skills; excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication abilities
- —General computer skills with Microsoft Office products
- —Ability to work shift work, particularly during refueling outages, power maneuvers, and plant start-ups
- —Ability to perform on-call responsibilities on a rotating schedule
Level-specific requirements:
Support Engineer: Minimum 2 years related engineering experience; Engineer in Training (EIT) Certificate or minimum 5 years reactor engineering experience
Senior Engineer: Minimum 5 years related engineering experience; Professional Engineer (PE) registered in Pennsylvania or minimum 7 years reactor engineering experience; working knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards
Principal Engineer: Minimum 10 years related engineering experience; Professional Engineer (PE) registered in Pennsylvania or equivalent advanced qualification; working knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards
Desired
- —Previous experience in Reactor Engineering or Nuclear Engineering
- —Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or Engineer in Training (EIT) certification
- —Familiarity with BWR design and operations
Location
Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, near Berwick, Pennsylvania. Shift work required during refueling outages, power maneuvers, and plant start-ups. On-call rotating schedule required.
