Human Factors Specialist
About this role
Human Factors Specialist at Westinghouse serving as HF Design Authority and Intelligent Customer for Springfields fuel fabrication site. Apply Human Factors Engineering principles across design and operations to optimize human capabilities, reduce error, and enhance nuclear safety. Support safety case development, procedure design, Human Reliability Assessments, and regulatory compliance (ONR, IAEA).
Responsibilities
- —Act as HF Design Authority for major and minor projects, ensuring HF requirements are defined, implemented, and assured throughout the project lifecycle
- —Fulfill the Human Factors Intelligent Customer role for Springfields site, providing informed challenge and oversight of HF deliverables
- —Apply Human Factors Engineering (HFE) principles across design lifecycle including human–system interfaces (HSIs), control rooms, workspaces, and alarm systems
- —Support site safety case process using appropriate HF methods and regulatory guidance (ONR, IAEA standards)
- —Conduct Human Reliability Assessments (HRA) and task analysis to identify human performance risks in operations, maintenance, and emergency scenarios
- —Review and develop operating, maintenance, and emergency procedures to ensure clarity, usability, and consistent application
- —Plan and support verification and validation (V&V) activities including integrated system validation
- —Develop and implement Human Factors Integration Plans (HFIPs) using graded, risk-informed approaches
- —Support HF capability and training contributions including Systematic Approach to Training (SAT)
- —Participate in event and incident investigations with focus on systemic and organizational causes
Qualifications
- —Degree (minimum 2:1 or equivalent) in Ergonomics, Human Factors, Psychology, or relevant engineering discipline
- —Experience in high-hazard, highly regulated industry (nuclear, defence, oil & gas, aerospace, rail)
- —Demonstrated experience as a Human Factors Specialist role supported by relevant qualifications
Desired
- —Experience with nuclear safety cases and Human Reliability Assessments (HRA)
- —C.ErgHF status and MCIEHF membership
- —Technical Member status and/or progress toward chartered status
