Utility Operator
About this role
Entry-level Utility Operator role at Cook Nuclear Plant (AEP). Operate and maintain nuclear plant auxiliary equipment outside the control room as part of a structured training class starting November 2026. Work directly with nuclear systems in a safety-critical environment.
Responsibilities
- —Operate, align, and verify alignment of auxiliary systems according to approved procedures and instructions
- —Inspect assigned plant areas and running equipment for proper operation, valve alignment, and standby equipment readiness
- —Clear, tag, and return equipment to service as directed in accordance with Clearance Permit System
- —Take readings, record data, and make appropriate entries in station logs and procedural paperwork
- —Report and maintain logs of unusual events and changes in operating conditions
- —Support and participate in Emergency Plan Organization, HAZMAT response, and Corrective Action Program activities as assigned
- —Continuously upgrade knowledge and skills related to nuclear operations
Qualifications
- —High school diploma or GED
- —Entry-level work experience
- —Pass preemployment POSS Test
- —Knowledge of nuclear standards, policies, practices, and procedures relating to plant operations
- —Strong interpersonal skills
- —Effective written and verbal communication skills
Location
Onsite at Cook Nuclear Plant, Michigan. Plant walk-downs with exposure to heat, cold, noise, and radiation. Medium physical demand level: exerting 20–50 pounds occasionally, 10–25 pounds frequently.
