Required qualifications
- Demonstrated ability to safely operate within highly regulated nuclear environments
- Knowledge of PGO and Nuclear safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements
- Understanding of substation equipment, switching operations, and electrical systems
- Ability to work independently and lead small technical activities
- Proficiency in reading electrical prints and understanding AC/DC circuit principles
- Availability for 24/7 emergency response and on-call support
- Ability to travel between multiple nuclear switchyards and jurisdictions
About this role
Mid-to-senior craft-level technician role supporting Duke Energy's seven nuclear switchyards across the Carolinas. Perform maintenance, construction, and emergency response work in NRC-regulated nuclear facilities. Level III positions involve leadership of other technicians and cross-functional coordination between Nuclear and Power Generation Operations (PGO).
Responsibilities
- Study, retain, and operate following all PGO and Nuclear safety rules
- Safely lead small-to-moderate risk jobs and work independently
- Perform substation equipment isolation, clearances, and grounding practices
- Execute switching & tagging and nuclear safety tagging procedures (eSOMS)
- Follow PGO work methods, JPI procedures, and Nuclear Administrative/Technical Procedures
- Demonstrate Human Performance practices and stop work during uncertainty
- Execute PGO and Nuclear processes, interface agreements, and work scheduling systems
- Ensure regulatory compliance with NRC, NERC, OSHA, NEIL, NOS, and QA requirements
- Operate responsibly within nuclear switchyards and protected areas
- Respond to 24/7 emergency callouts and restoration efforts
- Understand AC/DC circuit principles and read electrical prints
- Perform calibration, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic equipment
- Execute switching, grounding, equipment testing, DC supply systems, AC low voltage systems, and preventive maintenance
- Perform rigging, lifting, and aerial work as required
- (Level III only) Provide coaching on safety, technical, and procedural matters to other technicians
- (Level III only) Lead and oversee construction and maintenance activities
- (Level III only) Serve on committees and enhance policies/procedures
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with Human Performance practices and continuous improvement culture
- Familiarity with both PGO Switching & Tagging and nuclear safety tagging programs
- Knowledge of test equipment, preventive maintenance, inspections, and troubleshooting
- Experience with rigging, lifting, and aerial work
- Background in electrical maintenance or substation operations
- (Level III) Prior experience leading technicians or team members
Location, schedule, and travel
On-site at nuclear switchyards in the Carolinas; 24/7 on-call availability required; travel to other switchyards and regions as workload demands; frequent aerial work and heavy lifting involved.
