Required qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from accredited university
- Minimum 6 years of equipment/component design experience (relevant M.S. may substitute 2 years)
- Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
- Deep understanding of structural and seismic design
- Experience in finite element stress analysis and commercial mechanical analysis tools (ANSYS emphasis)
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with creative thinking ability
- Ability to work with minimal direction and manage concurrent tasks
About this role
Senior Mechanical Engineer supporting design development of reactor structures and components for TerraPower's Natrium Generation IV Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor. Design structural equipment and supports (frames, brackets, hangers) under ASME Section III nuclear design standards, working within a multidisciplinary engineering team.
Responsibilities
- Perform detailed design, analysis, and documentation for ASME Section III Class NF structural supports, including frames, brackets, hangers, and support elements
- Develop and maintain design specifications, calculations, load evaluations, and qualification reports in compliance with ASME Section III and related nuclear codes
- Prepare engineering design packages and perform/review design calculations for code compliance
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define design requirements, resolve technical issues, and optimize component performance
- Interface with quality teams, third-party reviewers, and regulatory bodies to support audits, design reviews, and code certification
- Support material selection, fabrication requirements, inspection criteria, and acceptance standards for Class NF components
- Participate in engineering change processes, nonconformance evaluations, and corrective action development
- Maintain current knowledge of ASME Section III revisions, NRC guidance, and industry best practices
Preferred qualifications
- CAD experience (SolidWorks preferred)
- Working experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III
Location, schedule, and travel
Onsite in Bellevue, Washington. Role involves extended sitting with occasional bending/stooping and fine motor control demands.
