Required qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Minimum 7 years equipment/component design experience
- Proficiency with 3D CAD and SolidWorks
- Experience with design of experiments and product testing
- Proficiency with finite element stress analysis and mechanical analysis methods
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple concurrent tasks
About this role
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer leading core component design for advanced nuclear reactors at TerraPower. Develop equipment and component design solutions for next-generation reactor technologies, manage cross-functional engineering teams, and drive innovation in nuclear energy and medical isotope applications.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate inputs from Engineering and Project teams to produce equipment and component design solutions including drawings, models, and specifications
- Plan and manage design activities execution to established timelines
- Propose and develop validation tests for functional and performance design requirements
- Perform scoping analysis and trade studies for design options
- Interface with cross-functional teams and subcontractors on design and analysis activities
- Conduct engineering reviews of team member deliverables and provide mentoring
- Apply nuclear industry best practices to maintain highest quality engineering design standards
Preferred qualifications
- Experience or familiarity with ASME Boiler Pressure Vessel Code Section III Division 5
- Design experience in nuclear industry with core assemblies
- Knowledge of DOE and NRC regulations
- Knowledge of neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, and/or structural analysis
- Experience with ANSYS finite element analysis
- Experience writing test requirements documents and developing nuclear product test campaigns
- Experience with manufacturing methodology and first article production
- Experience with technical evaluation and nonconformance evaluation of vendors/suppliers
Location, schedule, and travel
Onsite in Bellevue, Washington; 0–10% travel required.
