Required qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Minimum 8 years of equipment/component design experience (M.S. degree counts as 2 years)
- Working experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III
- Experience writing design specifications, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and Design for Assembly (DFA)
- Proficiency in finite element stress analysis and commercial mechanical analysis tools, especially ANSYS
- Proficiency with CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred)
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills; ability to work independently and on multiple concurrent tasks
About this role
Senior Mechanical Design Engineer for TerraPower's Natrium Generation IV Reactor program. Lead design development of advanced reactor structures and components from requirements through final delivery, including finite element analysis, ASME Code compliance, and mentoring of junior engineering staff.
Responsibilities
- Design reactor structures and components from requirements through final design, coordinating inputs from Engineering and Project teams
- Perform scoping analysis and calculations for design options; interface with engineering analysis activities
- Conduct finite element stress analysis and mechanical analysis using commercial tools; present results at design reviews
- Technically manage supplier activities and assess technical merit of solutions from team members
- Lead design reviews and provide technical direction and mentoring to junior engineers and subcontractors
- Support continuous learning and application of nuclear industry best practices to improve design quality and processes
Location, schedule, and travel
Onsite; 0–10% travel; minimal physical exertion (up to 25 lbs lift capacity); standard 8+ hour/day work environment with prolonged sitting
