Required qualifications
- Minimum 5 years related experience with Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Nuclear, or Chemical Engineering (or equivalent); OR 3 years with Master's degree; OR PhD with demonstrated ability to perform thermal-hydraulic analysis of nuclear reactor core and/or system components
- Minimum 3 years demonstrated use of commercial CFD package (STAR-CCM+ preferred)
- Working knowledge of variety of CFD best practices, modeling approaches, and meshing parameters suited for specific applications
- Creative thinker with demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work on multiple tasks concurrently
- Strong communication skills
- High degree of trust and integrity with ability to communicate openly and foster teamwork
About this role
Senior Engineer reporting to the Manager of System Thermal Hydraulics Methods & Analysis, performing investigations and analyses of thermal hydraulics and fluid dynamics for TerraPower's liquid sodium-cooled Natrium Reactor Program. You will run multiple commercial CFD codes and conduct steady-state and transient hydraulic network analysis for advanced reactor design and safety.
Responsibilities
- Perform analysis and design of structures, systems, and components for the Natrium Reactor
- Conduct computational thermal-fluids analysis using 3D CFD tools
- Perform steady-state and transient hydraulic network analysis
- Document and present results to peers and outside organizations
- Support continuous learning and application of nuclear industry best practices to maintain highest quality engineering design
- Proactively identify process change and enhancement opportunities
- Work with cross-disciplinary teams to analyze thermal and mechanical design considerations for the reactor and its components
- Work on complex issues with minimal supervision, selecting appropriate methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria
Preferred qualifications
- Experience with one or more CAD modeling tools such as SolidWorks
- Experience with nuclear systems applications of Computational Fluid Dynamics
- Experience with low Prandtl number fluid heat transfer
- Familiarity and experience with CFD verification and validation of computational modeling methodologies
- Experience in Software Quality Assurance (SQA) program and Nuclear Quality Assurance (NQA-1) standards
Location, schedule, and travel
Onsite, 0–10% travel required. Extended sitting (>8 hours/day), fine motor control, visual and audio focused work. Minimal physical exertion with ability to safely lift up to 25 pounds.
