Required qualifications
- B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Minimum 6+ years of equipment/component design experience (relevant M.S. degree counts as two years)
- Active Professional Engineer (P.E.) license required
- Working experience with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section III
- Demonstrated experience certifying Design Specifications and Design Reports for nuclear pressure-retaining components
- Deep understanding of ASME Section III, NQA-1, and related NRC regulations
- Experience in finite element stress analysis, mechanical analysis methods, and commercial mechanical stress analysis modeling tools (emphasis on ANSYS)
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Strong analytical/problem-solving skills and creative thinking
About this role
Senior Mechanical Engineer position leading ASME Section III design for TerraPower's Natrium Generation IV advanced reactor. You'll develop design solutions for reactor structures and fuel handling components, managing design specifications, compliance documentation, and licensing deliverables for high-temperature molten salt reactor systems.
Responsibilities
- Perform detailed design, analysis, and documentation for ASME Section III Class HB pressure boundaries and Class HG internals, including fuel handling systems
- Develop and maintain design specifications, calculations, load evaluations, and qualification reports in compliance with ASME Section III and related nuclear codes and standards
- Prepare and certify engineering design packages, including performing or reviewing design calculations to ensure accuracy and code compliance
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to define design requirements, resolve technical issues, and optimize component performance
- Interface with internal quality teams, third-party reviewers, and regulatory bodies to support audits, design reviews, and code certification processes
- Support material selection, fabrication requirements, inspection criteria, and acceptance standards for Class HB and HG components
- Participate in engineering change processes, nonconformance evaluations, and corrective action development as required
- Maintain current knowledge of ASME Section III revisions, NRC guidance, and industry best practices
- Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers as needed
Location, schedule, and travel
Onsite role with minimal physical exertion; ability to sit for extended periods and safely lift up to 25 pounds required.
