Required qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related discipline. 10+ years of experience in radioactive waste engineering, fuel cycle engineering, nuclear facility operations, or radioactive waste management. Strong understanding of radioactive waste classification and characterization, treatment and disposal pathways. Familiarity with 10 CFR Parts 20, 61, 70, 71, 72; DOT radioactive material transportation regulations; and DOE directives (DOE/NE O 435.1, DOE M 435.1, DOE O 474.2). Experience preparing technical engineering documentation and excellent communication/technical writing skills.
About this role
Oklo seeks a Radiological Waste Engineering Lead to develop and execute waste management strategy across advanced fission reactors, fuel recycling facilities, and isotope production platforms. This role owns radioactive waste considerations from concept through operations, working cross-functionally to embed waste management into facility design early and support NRC licensing.
Responsibilities
- Develop enterprise-wide radioactive waste management strategies for advanced reactors, fuel recycling, isotope production, and supporting infrastructure
- Lead radioactive waste system design from conceptual through detailed engineering phases
- Define waste characterization methodologies, acceptance criteria, treatment, packaging, storage, transportation, and disposal strategies
- Evaluate waste minimization opportunities and optimize process flows to reduce generation
- Lead technical reviews of waste system designs by internal teams and contractors
- Develop licensing strategies supporting NRC radioactive waste requirements and prepare technical sections for license applications and environmental reports
- Interface with NRC, DOE, Agreement States, disposal facilities, and transportation authorities on regulatory compliance
- Interpret 10 CFR regulations affecting radioactive waste management and communicate impacts to project teams
- Support Integrated Safety Analysis (ISA), Environmental Reports, Safety Analysis Reports, and licensing documentation
- Develop compliance strategies for low-level waste, mixed waste, hazardous waste, state-defined categories, and naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM)
- Establish onsite waste handling requirements and lead procurement/development of internal waste tracking systems
- Develop transportation strategies for radioactive materials and evaluate disposal pathways across commercial and government facilities
- Lead development and maintenance of commercial waste profiles; coordinate with disposal vendors and transportation providers
- Develop cost models for long-term waste disposition
- Mentor junior engineers and establish waste engineering best practices and internal standards
Preferred qualifications
Advanced degree in Nuclear Engineering or related field. Experience supporting NRC licensing or DOE approvals. Experience with fuel cycle facilities, isotope production facilities, waste acceptance documentation development, and transportation package selection and certification.
