Radioactive Waste Handling Engineer
About this role
Design and implement compliant, safe shipping and storage solutions for nuclear waste ranging from byproduct to high-level waste (HLW) for Oklo's Fuel Recycling Team. You'll ensure regulatory compliance and operational excellence in nuclear waste management across the full lifecycle, including waste characterization, packaging design, storage system analysis, and long-term disposal strategy development.
Responsibilities
- —Collaborate with internal teams, regulators, and external partners to design, implement, and oversee waste storage programs
- —Design, analyze, and implement waste storage systems and packaging compliant with NRC regulations (10 CFR Parts 61, 72) and industry standards
- —Perform engineering analyses of waste package performance (chemical, thermal, radiological) to support safety case development
- —Collaborate cross-functionally with operations, engineering, and licensing teams to integrate waste storage requirements into facility designs
- —Develop compliant waste storage programs for Class A, B, C, GTCC, and HLW waste classifications
- —Coordinate with licensed shippers and disposal facilities to execute safe and efficient waste transport and storage
- —Manage contracts with licensed disposal facilities, transporters, and shippers
- —Develop documentation and procedures to support licensing, inspections, audits, and regulatory reviews
- —Support long-term waste strategy development, including disposal pathways, interim storage solutions, and packaging innovations
Qualifications
- —Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in nuclear waste management or related field
- —Bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering, environmental engineering, or related field
- —Experience conducting engineering analyses related to nuclear systems or waste management
- —Knowledge of 10 CFR Parts 61 and 72 requirements for safe storage of radioactive waste
- —Experience with radioactive waste lifecycle management, containerization, handling, and storage
- —Experience with hands-on nuclear facility operations, packaging design, or radioactive material handling
Desired
- —Knowledge of and experience applying 10 CFR Part 71 requirements
- —Familiarity with waste incidental to reprocessing (WAIR) determination requirements
- —Background in environmental compliance and permitting
- —Experience interfacing with NRC, EPA, and other regulatory authorities
- —Experience with commercial nuclear waste programs
- —Experience with waste characterization
Location
Remote with required travel to Santa Clara, CA headquarters twice quarterly; first two weeks of onboarding must be in-person at headquarters.
