Required qualifications
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from accredited university
- 15+ years relevant experience
- Demonstrated experience designing complex structures, multi-discipline integration, and mechanical pressure vessel equipment
- Strong configuration management and design control tools experience on nuclear or complex industrial applications
- Experience with quality standards (ASME NQA-1, ISO 9001) on design activities
- Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
- Self-starter capable of coordinating within design teams with minimal direction
- Ability to manage competing objectives and design constraints
- Must meet minimum education and experience criteria per ANSI/ANS 3.1
About this role
Principal Engineer supporting TerraPower's Natrium Demonstration Project—a first-of-a-kind advanced sodium-cooled fast reactor. Lead multidisciplinary engineering teams to design and deliver primary reactor systems (heat transport, reactivity control, containment) toward NRC licensing and commercial deployment.
Responsibilities
- Drive alignment across nuclear, thermal hydraulic, mechanical, instrumentation & controls, and civil-structural engineering teams to define and refine system requirements
- Design nuclear and industrial mechanical systems including requirements definition, analysis, specifications, and system drawings
- Develop and maintain system architecture and design documentation (Design Basis Documents, P&IDs, Interface Control Documents)
- Establish equipment design bases per regulatory criteria, ASME standards, functional and performance criteria, and FMEA
- Evaluate technology development requirements and implement programs for novel technologies or approaches
- Ensure designs address operability, maintainability, and reliability across lifecycle
- Manage technical interfaces with suppliers; review and verify deliverables
- Prepare engineering change packages with calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications
- Support NRC licensing activities for construction and operating licenses
- Participate in design reviews at project milestones to verify compliance and design completeness
Preferred qualifications
- Previous nuclear reactor systems or high-temperature pressure vessel design experience
- Knowledge of ASME BPVC Section III
- Professional engineering licensure (PE)
- Experience originating and developing technical documentation for system architecture
