Required qualifications
- B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering with 5–20 years' experience, OR M.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering with 3–15 years' experience, OR Ph.D. degree in Nuclear Engineering with 2–10 years' experience
- Strong MCNP skills and experience performing radiation shielding calculations for both gammas and neutrons
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability and professionalism to work within published regulatory guidelines
- Familiar with variance reduction using MCNP, including surface source read/write, mesh tallies, and weight windows
- Knowledgeable or highly motivated to quickly learn basic nuclear reactor design concepts
About this role
TerraPower seeks a Nuclear Shielding and Criticality Engineer to perform radiation shielding design and analysis for advanced nuclear reactors. This role requires strong MCNP expertise and involves calculating dose rates, activation rates, neutron fluence, and developing criticality safety analyses. You will serve as a technical subject matter expert, mentor junior engineers, and coordinate across functional groups.
Responsibilities
- Perform radiation shielding design and analysis for advanced nuclear reactors, including calculating dose rates, activation rates, neutron fluence rates, and energy deposition rates
- Develop radiation sources based on material activation analysis for non-fuel in-vessel components
- Perform criticality calculations and develop upper subcritical limits (USLs)
- Establish and maintain formal documentation of analysis results
- Act as a technical subject matter expert in the area of shielding or criticality safety
- Mentor or provide technical guidance to less experienced engineers
- Create formal networks involving coordination among groups and exert cross-functional influence
Preferred qualifications
- Experience in criticality safety
- Experience working under NQA-1 quality program
- Strong computational expertise
- Experience with Attila/Attila4MC and computer-aided drafting (e.g., SolidWorks, SpaceClaim)
- Familiarity with ADVANTG for weight windows generation
- Fast reactor experience
- Strong programming skills in any language, particularly Python
- Ability to act independently to determine methods on new or special assignments
Location, schedule, and travel
Onsite in Bellevue, Washington; 0–10% travel. Work environment includes sitting for extended periods with minimal physical exertion; ability to lift up to 25 pounds required; visual and audio-focused work; >8 hours/day.
