Nuclear Fuel and Analysis – Nuclear Engineer (Seeking All-Levels)
About this role
Nuclear Engineer position in Southern Nuclear's Nuclear Fuel & Analysis department at Birmingham, AL headquarters. Support BWR and PWR fuel engineering, core design, and operational analysis for eight nuclear units across Alabama and Georgia. Responsibilities include reactor physics analyses, reload design, core monitoring, spent fuel storage oversight, and special nuclear material control. Open to all experience levels with opportunities for professional and technical growth.
Responsibilities
- —Coordinate, direct, and/or perform reactor physics analyses required to load, license, and operate nuclear reactor cores
- —Execute and/or collaborate with fuel vendors on reload design modeling, input selection, and output validation for licensing documentation
- —Monitor core operations to ensure exposure and licensing assumptions are met
- —Manage cycle reload process including reload meetings, special assignments, exposure accounting, cycle management reports, and control blade/component management
- —Perform analysis and vendor oversight for spent nuclear fuel storage in wet and dry storage systems per applicable regulations
- —Develop and oversee implementation of long-term fuel storage strategies and projections
- —Perform governance and oversight of special nuclear material control and accountability
- —Participate in formulating strategic decisions and recommendations on key technical issues across the organization
- —Serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited college, OR Professional Engineer (P.E.) license/certification, OR accredited undergraduate degree in Applied Science/Mathematics with Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering from an ABET accredited program; Nuclear power plant or related industrial experience
Desired
Experience with applications of BWR or PWR reactor physics; Experience with BWR or PWR fuel and core design, and AOO analysis; Experience with systems, design, and analysis of SNC nuclear units; Ability to solve complex problems and make sound engineering decisions based on experience and industry practices; Ability to manage and implement nuclear engineering analysis and technical programs; Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation abilities; Ability to work independently and in team environments
