About this role

AEP is seeking environmental specialists to support new generation project development and compliance across Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and renewable energy. You will lead environmental permitting, regulatory engagement, and operational compliance strategies for nuclear and renewable generating assets, including NRC Early Site Permit and Construction Permit applications.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct due diligence reviews of new generation projects, prepare diligence reports, and communicate environmental risks to management and stakeholders
  • Scope and coordinate environmental field studies including species surveys, habitat assessments, wetland delineations, and historic/cultural resource surveys
  • Oversee preparation of environmental permits and consultations for nuclear projects, including NPDES, Army Corps of Engineers, Section 401 Water Quality Certification, USFWS Section 7/10, SHPO Section 106, and FAA determinations
  • Support Nuclear Regulatory Commission Early Site Permit and Construction Permit applications including NEPA documentation
  • Develop and implement operational wildlife conservation plans and post-construction monitoring strategies for renewable projects
  • Lead and coordinate environmental work activities with internal teams and external consultants
  • Provide permit and compliance support to hydroelectric facilities including FERC license and relicensing
  • Build working relationships with federal and state resource agency staff
  • Track proposed rulemakings, develop regulatory comments, and participate in industry organizations
  • Prepare technical reports on environmental subjects for management, regulatory bodies, and industry groups

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, natural resources, ecology, or related field. SG7 level: minimum 6 years of environmental experience. SG8 level: minimum 10 years of environmental experience. SG9 level: minimum 18 years of environmental experience. Available to work overtime, call-out overtime, and shift work as required.

Desired

Master's or Doctorate degree; Registration in recognized professional environmental associations and organizations.

Location

Sedentary physical demand; 10–25% travel; shift work and periodic overtime required; 40 hours per week standard.
