Natrium Lead Pump Engineer
About this role
TerraPower seeks a Natrium Lead Pump Engineer to direct design and testing of the Primary Sodium Pump and Intermediate Sodium Pump for the Natrium fast reactor demonstration project. You'll serve as design lead for sodium pumps, manage technical requirements, perform vendor oversight, and drive resolution of complex hydraulic, mechanical, and motor design issues while contributing to the primary heat transport system.
Responsibilities
- —Develop and manage technical requirements for Primary Sodium Pump (PSP) and Intermediate Sodium Pump (ISP), including ASME Section III code application and design specifications
- —Perform technical vendor oversight of PSP and ISP designers; review and accept vendor deliverables
- —Support PSP and ISP design through thermal-hydraulic and mechanical analyses using hand calculations and software methods
- —Lead design reviews for PSP and ISP; coordinate with thermal, seismic, structural, pipe stress, and heat transfer analysis teams
- —Develop testing requirements and test specifications; provide technical oversight for PSP and ISP qualification testing
- —Interface with mechanical, instrumentation & controls, civil, and nuclear design disciplines to identify plant design information and specify system criteria
- —Establish and maintain system requirements and design basis documents for primary heat transport system
- —Generate design packages including calculations, design reports, P&IDs, 3D models, and engineering specifications
- —Support NRC licensing activities by assisting in preparation of licensing submittals
Qualifications
- —B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline from ABET-accredited university (advanced degrees accepted in lieu of experience)
- —12+ years direct experience in pump design and development
- —Demonstrated experience in centrifugal or axial pump design, preferably reactor coolant pump (RCP) design
- —Proven experience applying ASME Section III Code design, especially with rotating equipment
- —Knowledge and demonstrated experience with pump testing and qualification programs
- —Knowledge of electric motor operation and electromechanical design concepts
- —Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
- —Strong attention to detail and commitment to technical excellence
- —Self-starter capable of leading design team efforts with minimal direction
- —Ability to manage projects with competing objectives and design constraints
