About this role

Mechanical Design Engineer III or Senior level role supporting Duke Energy's nuclear fleet corporate design engineering department. Develop mechanical engineering solutions for plant equipment upgrades including HVAC, piping, heat exchangers, and hydraulic systems across Robinson Nuclear Plant and the broader fleet portfolio.

Responsibilities

  • Develop scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes including HVAC, piping design, heat exchanger evaluations, and hydraulic piping/tubing design and modifications
  • Conduct mechanical equipment evaluations and independent reviews of peer-prepared engineering products
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and present recommendations to resolve issues
  • Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support
  • Develop or revise design specifications and technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes
  • Develop safety screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program (Master's degree in engineering may substitute)
  • For Engineer III level: 4–6 years of engineering experience
  • For Senior level: Minimum 6 years of engineering experience OR 5 years with state registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance
  • Ability to work lawfully in the U.S. without employment-based immigration sponsorship

Desired

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Background in hydraulic analysis, HVAC, pipe stress analysis ASME B31.1, and ASME Section III
  • Proficiency in engineering theories and principles
  • Proficiency in principles of project management
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Experience with nuclear industry standard design process

Location

Primarily office environment with field work at plant for system walkdowns and modification support; 5–15% travel; occasional overnight travel; must wear personal protective equipment; potential Emergency Response Organization (ERO) on-call duty rotation with defined response times required.
