Mechanical Central Design Engineer- Birmingham
About this role
Mechanical design engineer for Southern Nuclear's Birmingham office developing designs for nuclear plant modifications and retrofits. Responsibilities include design calculations, CAD drawings, field verification, and coordination with external engineering firms and project teams across refueling outages and special projects.
Responsibilities
- —Prepare and coordinate design development, calculations, and drawing changes for plant modifications and retrofits
- —Conduct field walk downs in industrial environments for as-built verification and design constructability assessment
- —Provide design oversight for products developed by external Architect/Engineering firms
- —Interface with project managers, implementation engineers, and plant department personnel to ensure design requirements are met
- —Manage special projects and refueling outage roles including design implementation oversight, problem solving, and issue resolution
- —Conduct post-modification testing and develop test procedures
- —Create Design Change Packages and supporting documentation
- —Develop and maintain electrical calculations including voltage drop, breaker coordination, and load study analysis
- —Ensure design drawings are updated after design modifications
- —Perform on-call duty engineer and emergency plan response duties with 90-minute report time to plant site
- —Manage design scope, schedule, and budget to meet site objectives
Qualifications
- —BS in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution or PE license
- —Background screening and NRC Fitness for Duty clearance
- —Willingness to relocate within one hour of SNC Emergency Operations Facility for emergency response availability
- —Proficiency in Microsoft Office products
- —Strong written and oral communication skills
- —Ability to make principled, data-based decisions
- —Team collaboration and accountability

- —Nuclear design modifications experience
- —Construction planning, scheduling, and implementation experience
- —Project management/oversight experience
- —Working knowledge of design processes and configuration management
- —Working knowledge of applicable discipline codes and standards
- —Working knowledge of PWR systems, structures, and components
- —Working knowledge of nuclear power plant design and systems
- —Experience with development and maintenance of design-related calculations
Location
Birmingham, Alabama. On-call duty engineer and emergency response requirements with 90-minute report time to plant site. Field walk downs in industrial environments required.
