Required qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from ABET-accredited program (or Master's degree in engineering)
  • Minimum 7 years of engineering experience with at least 5 years directly in nuclear power industry

About this role

Lead Duke Energy's Probabilistic Risk Assessment (PRA) Applications team to oversee risk-informed regulatory compliance, maintenance planning, and safety evaluations across nuclear sites. Direct PRA modeling strategy, NRC interface activities (SDP, LERs, LARs), and risk-informed Technical Specification evaluations. Manage team qualifications, budget, and cross-functional coordination with Operations, Regulatory Affairs, and Engineering to support licensing basis compliance and operational decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee Significance Determination Process (SDP) activities and serve as primary PRA interface with NRC Region II Senior Resident Inspectors
  • Schedule bi-annual site leadership updates on PRA activities and maintain stakeholder communication across Operations, Regulatory Affairs, Engineering, and Training
  • Manage budget, Notices of Enforcement Discretion (NOEDs), Licensee Event Reports (LERs), and License Amendment Requests (LARs) development and NRC transmittals
  • Support Technical Specification 3.0.4.b risk evaluations and manage Phoenix Risk Monitor tool for work week scheduling and risk-informed decisions
  • Assign qualified PRA resources to prepare and review risk analyses; ensure personnel maintain proper qualifications and conduct pre/post-job briefs and critiques
  • Oversee PRA deliverables including Application Updates, Risk-Informed ISI, Maintenance Rule documentation, Component Risk Ranking analyses, and Time-Critical/Time-Sensitive Operator Action evaluations
  • Guide scope, hazards, and communication accuracy for risk evaluations; ensure project timelines and information needs are clearly communicated
  • Lead team planning, resource allocation, and performance monitoring; identify process improvements and support external engagement with EPRI, PWROG, BWROG, NEI, and peer utilities
  • Ensure technical reports, correspondence, and documentation meet company and NRC regulatory objectives per approved Safety Evaluations and NRC-approved methodologies
  • Identify and support team training needs through seminars and work group-specific courses

Preferred qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of PRA activities experience
  • Knowledge of risk-informed applications: Risk-Informed ISI, Maintenance Rule, Mitigating Systems Performance Index (MSPI), NOEDs, SDPs, LERs, Component Risk Ranking, Time Critical/Time Sensitive Operator Actions, LAR development
  • Proficiency with PRA software tools: Phoenix Risk Monitor, Phoenix Architect, CAFTA
  • Demonstrated involvement in nuclear industry organizations (EPRI, PWROG, BWROG, NEI)
