Required qualifications

High School Diploma or GED. For Level II: 3+ years related machining/mechanical repair experience. For Level III: 8+ years related experience. Demonstrated ability to setup and operate manual lathe, milling machines, boring machines, grinders, and metal cutting saws. Proficiency holding tolerances to ±0.001". Ability to read shop drawings, blueprints, and work instructions. Proficiency with Inventor CAD and Microsoft Office. Willingness to travel and support fleet needs outside home location.

About this role

Progressive machine shop position within Duke Energy's nuclear and fossil Generation Fleet. Technicians perform reverse engineering, component refurbishment, pump overhaul, and turbine-generator repairs. Advancement paths include CNC programming, specialized welding, and equipment expertise. Work primarily in controlled shop environment with travel to support fleet maintenance requests.

Responsibilities

  • Disassemble mechanical equipment (pumps, valves, gearboxes) and inspect components for wear and damage
  • Perform machining operations (lathe, milling, boring, drilling, grinding) to repair or fabricate parts to 0.001" tolerance
  • Use precision instruments (micrometers, calipers, dial gauges, hardness testers, XRF analyzer) to verify specifications
  • Operate shop equipment including forklifts, steam cleaners, sandblasters, water jet, and oxy/fuel cutting systems
  • Safely inspect, rig, and operate overhead cranes up to 60-ton capacity
  • Perform preventive maintenance and maintain shop organization
  • Travel to support fleet requests and field machining operations as needed

Preferred qualifications

Technical school or military machinist training. Journeyman mechanic or millwright certification. NCCCO/NCCCR mobile/bridge crane certification. Experience disassembling/reassembling pumps (ring section, volute, boiler feed) in shop and field. CNC machine experience. Horizontal and vertical boring machine proficiency. Field machining operations (boring bars, stud removal, flange facing). Static and dynamic balancing of pump components. Turbine/generator component repair (diaphragms, blade rings, packing boxes, oil seals, valve subassemblies).

Location, schedule, and travel

Majority of work performed in controlled maintenance repair shop environment; travel required to support nuclear and fossil generation fleet operations.
