Required qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science or Master's degree in engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • Minimum 4 years of engineering experience (Engineer III level) or at least 6 years of engineering experience (Senior Engineer level)
  • Demonstrated ability to complete work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment such as hard-hat, safety glasses, and fall protection as needed

About this role

Fire Protection Engineer supporting the Brunswick Nuclear Plant fleet in Southport, NC. Serve as the fire protection subject matter expert ensuring NFPA code compliance and regulatory adherence across Duke Energy's nuclear operations.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the fire protection subject matter expert, ensuring compliance with NFPA codes, regulatory requirements, fleet/site procedures, and plant licensing standards
  • Provide engineering and field support to identify, analyze, and resolve fire protection program issues
  • Support Fire PRAs, NSCA updates, surveillance testing, pre-plans, impairment monitoring, and engineering calculations
  • Prepare for and support NRC, INPO, NEIL, NSRB, and NOS inspections and audits
  • Monitor fire protection system performance, review engineering changes, respond to industry operating experience, and represent the company professionally
  • Conduct field walk-downs in operating plant environments
  • Participate in Emergency Response Organization (ERO) as required

Preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Fire Protection from an ABET-accredited program
  • At least three years of experience in Fire Protection Engineering responsibilities
  • Nuclear Power Plant experience
  • Registered Professional Engineer

Location, schedule, and travel

Hybrid (remote and onsite at Brunswick Nuclear Plant in Southport, NC after onboarding); must live within reasonable commute; 5-15% travel; on-call duty required; must be available for weekends, holidays, and overtime; occasional overnight travel.
