About this role

Oklo is hiring an External Hazards Regulatory Engineer to develop licensing strategy and support technical work for addressing external hazards (seismic events, flooding, man-made hazards) at advanced fission facilities. This role bridges regulatory expertise and engineering analysis for NRC compliance of next-generation reactor designs.

Responsibilities

  • Define scopes of work, review technical proposals, and oversee execution of external hazards analyses by internal teams and external contractors
  • Manage progress on external hazards analyses, regulatory submittals, and licensing support activities
  • Ensure integration of external hazard assessments (seismic, flooding, meteorological) into overall licensing strategy and design-basis evaluations
  • Identify and assess potential safety challenges posed by external hazards early in project development, and recommend mitigation measures or design modifications
  • Track changes in NRC regulations (10 CFR Part 100, Regulatory Guides, NUREGs) and evaluate impact on external hazards compliance strategy
  • Develop and maintain regulatory strategy documents, white papers, and briefing materials
  • Represent external hazards considerations in cross-functional planning and strategic meetings with internal stakeholders
  • Oversee internal external hazards project management systems
  • Collaborate with engineering, design, and licensing teams to incorporate hazard analysis results into probabilistic risk assessments and safety evaluations
  • Review deliverables from constructors relevant to external hazards
  • Coordinate preparation and review of responses to NRC requests for additional information (RAIs) on external hazards topics
  • Author, edit, and finalize technical reports, regulatory filings, presentations, and licensing documents

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of experience performing or evaluating external hazards assessments
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in civil engineering, environmental engineering, nuclear engineering, or similar field
  • Technical expertise in external hazards and their impact on facilities
  • Ability to perform risk-informed analysis, deterministic safety analysis, and hazard modeling
  • Familiarity with NRC licensing processes and safety case development
  • Ability to interpret regulations and guidance documents and prepare or review regulatory submittals

Desired

  • Experience with Nuclear Regulatory Commission or Department of Energy requirements
  • Experience with International Building Code (IBC)
  • Familiarity with industry codes and standards such as ASCE 7 (seismic design)

Location

Remote with required travel to Santa Clara, CA headquarters twice per quarter; first two weeks of onboarding must be in-person at headquarters.
