Environmental Health and Safety Specialist
About this role
Environmental Health & Safety Specialist at Kairos Power, a advanced nuclear reactor developer. You will develop and implement comprehensive EHS programs for a growing nuclear facility across R&D, construction, and operations phases. This role manages regulatory compliance, conducts safety audits, oversees hazardous materials handling, and fosters a safety-first culture across employees, contractors, and vendors in a nuclear development and operational environment.
Responsibilities
- —Develop, implement and maintain environmental, health and safety (EHS) programs compliant with nuclear regulatory requirements (NRC, DOE, OSHA)
- —Oversee safety compliance for internal employees, contractors and vendors on-site, including Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) processes
- —Manage and conduct inspections and audits regularly to verify compliance and identify improvement opportunities
- —Develop and manage waste processes including disposal, recycling and hazardous materials handling (radiological and conventional)
- —Lead safety committee meetings, toolbox talks, lunch and learns, and safety moments to foster direct communication
- —Collaborate with cross-functional teams, management and external agencies to assess and mitigate safety risks
- —Partner with Learning and Development to design and update EHS training and emergency response plans
- —Investigate incidents and accidents, perform root cause analyses and implement preventive measures with thorough record-keeping
- —Collect, analyze and report industrial hygiene data to maintain low recordable incident rates
- —Work with HR to manage workers' compensation claims and ensure proper return-to-work processes
- —Drive outcomes through OKR process with key stakeholder partnerships
Qualifications
- —Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or related field
- —5+ years of experience in safety management, regulatory compliance and program development
- —Strong knowledge of EHS regulatory requirements including occupational safety, environmental compliance, hazardous materials, emergency preparedness and recordkeeping
- —Excellent communication, leadership and interpersonal skills
- —Proficiency in data analysis and reporting tools
- —Ability to work with and lead cross-functional teams
- —Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- —Proven track record of developing safety culture and reducing recordable incident rates

- —Environmental or Industrial Hygiene focus
- —Understanding of diverse requirements in manufacturing, R&D, and nuclear facility environments
- —Familiarity with nuclear regulatory framework (NRC regulations, radiological safety protocols)
Location
On-site at growing nuclear facility with exposure to varied environmental conditions including outdoor elements, elevated heights, confined spaces, low/high temperatures, noise, and chemical odors. Regular movement between work areas; ability to ascend/descend ladders and lifts; lift objects up to 50 pounds.
