About this role

TerraPower Isotopes seeks a Nuclear Containment Systems Engineer to design, develop, and commission mechanical systems for Ac-225 production facilities, with emphasis on hot cells and gloveboxes for handling alpha emitters. This role requires expertise in radiological enclosure specification, design codes (ASME, ASCE, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, AGS), and full commissioning of complex containment systems from requirements through startup.

Responsibilities

  • Lead or support specification and design of containment systems for radiological operations, transfer systems, remote manipulation, and equipment integration within hot cells and gloveboxes from requirements through commissioning and startup
  • Serve as design lead or backup for hot cells and gloveboxes, contributing to layout planning, shielding, and containment strategies for new production lines
  • Originate, review, and maintain equipment requirements, specifications, calculations, process narratives, commissioning and installation plans, and IQ/OQ/PQ documents
  • Participate in integration of mechanical systems with facility infrastructure and process workflows
  • Identify and ensure correct application of design codes (ASME, ASCE, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, AGS) to facility and lab systems
  • Communicate across TPI team and with stakeholders to support engineering design review and gather design input
  • Collaborate with engineering and project teams during facility design and construction to ensure mechanical system requirements are met
  • Support troubleshooting of mechanical equipment, maintain and modify equipment, and coordinate work procedures
  • Assist in developing procurement packages, communicate with vendors, oversee fabrication and delivery of custom equipment
  • Manage external vendor communication on design reviews, documentation, timelines, and factory acceptance testing
  • Provide technical guidance for routine operations, preventative maintenance, and upgrades of mechanical systems

Qualifications

  • B.S. in mechanical, nuclear, systems engineering, or related discipline from an accredited university
  • 5+ years direct experience with equipment design, testing, and commissioning in an industrial setting
  • Understanding of mechanical engineering codes, standards, and design best practices
  • Experience leading acceptance testing and full commissioning of equipment
  • Discipline, rigor, attention to detail, attention to safety, and procedural adherence
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to manage projects with competing objectives and design constraints

Desired

  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD)
  • Experience designing hot cells, gloveboxes, or other shielded mechanical systems
  • Familiarity with radiological handling and material transfer systems
  • Prior experience designing, installing systems, and performing acceptance testing in nuclear facilities, radiopharmaceutical facilities, or radiological areas
  • Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001
  • Strong troubleshooting skills developed in fast-paced military, nuclear, or radiopharmaceutical environments
