Required qualifications

Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited program (or Master's degree in Engineering); 0–2 years of engineering experience

About this role

Engineer I supporting nuclear site digital process systems, control systems, and data acquisition platforms at Duke Energy nuclear facilities. This role requires troubleshooting, maintenance, and cybersecurity expertise for critical plant infrastructure, including cyber-attack mitigation, vulnerability patching, and engineering change reviews.

Responsibilities

  • Identify, analyze, and resolve problems for digital control and data acquisition systems
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain plant digital systems, firewalls, and apply vulnerability patches and backups
  • Support Plant Operations staff on digital system issues and coordinate with vendors on hardware/software problems
  • Perform cyber and digital process system reviews for Engineering Change development
  • Support cyber-attack mitigation and incident response
  • Plan and execute work orders through established work management system
  • Physically and logically harden control and data acquisition systems and networks
  • Contribute to budgets and long-range planning; manage technical projects independently

Preferred qualifications

Knowledge of computer networks (Ethernet, TCP/IP, UDP/IP, switches, routers, firewalls); familiarity with operating systems (Windows 2003/2008/2012/XP/7/10, QNX, Linux); experience with OSI/PI historian systems; real-time data acquisition and control systems; ability to read plant drawings (control wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, logic diagrams); nuclear cyber security experience with NEI 08-09, NEI 10-04, NEI 10-08, or 10 CFR 73.54 NRC Cyber Rule; experience performing cyber security reviews and threat/vulnerability evaluations; demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and communicate effectively across organizational levels

Location, schedule, and travel

Hybrid (2 days onsite, 2 days remote; typical 4×10-hour schedule). Occasional nights, weekends, and extended hours for outages/emergencies. 5–15% travel to Duke sites and industry conferences. Must be able to work safely in industrial environment. Nuclear plant unescorted access required. Potential Emergency Response Organization callout duties with on-call rotation.
