About this role
CIFRE PhD position at Westinghouse to develop multimodal AI foundation models for 3D defect perception in nuclear industrial inspection. You will create explainable, physics-informed AI systems that fuse heterogeneous inspection data (visual, ultrasonic, historical) to enable automated defect detection and operator decision support in safety-critical nuclear environments.
Responsibilities
- —Develop methods to combine heterogeneous inspection data (visual, ultrasonic, historical, operator observations) into unified AI representations
- —Create multimodal AI architectures and fusion methodologies for integrating diverse data sources
- —Design interpretable, transparent AI models suitable for nuclear safety applications with confidence and uncertainty indicators
- —Develop 3D perception models capable of understanding spatial relationships within inspected nuclear components
- —Stage 1: Create labeled datasets and validate representation learning on visual inspection (VT) data
- —Stage 2: Transfer models to advanced ultrasonic testing (UT), integrate FMC/TFM data, and fuse VT/UT information
- —Build defect detection and characterization capabilities through representation learning
- —Associate AI outputs with physically meaningful features to maintain model explainability
Qualifications
Background in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Signal Processing, or Computer Engineering. Pursuing or eligible for PhD candidacy.
Desired
Experience with deep learning and foundation models. Expertise in representation learning, autoencoders, or generative models. Knowledge of multimodal AI and 3D computer vision. Familiarity with Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) techniques.
