About this role

CIFRE PhD student position at Westinghouse Electric France focusing on advanced ultrasonic testing (FMC, TFM, PWI) for inspection of nuclear safety-critical components. Develop and validate ultrasonic imaging techniques to improve defect detection, inspection reliability, and decision support tools for field inspections in nuclear industrial applications.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on advanced ultrasonic inspection methods including Full Matrix Capture (FMC), Total Focusing Method (TFM), Plane Wave Imaging (PWI), and multimode techniques
  • Design and perform experimental campaigns to investigate how acquisition parameters, material characteristics, and inspection configurations influence image quality and defect detectability
  • Develop signal processing and imaging algorithms for ultrasonic data analysis
  • Build and analyse large ultrasonic datasets comparing different acquisition modes and processing approaches
  • Develop sensitivity maps linking physical and instrumental parameters to inspection performance
  • Create methodologies and decision-support tools to improve operator decision-making during inspections
  • Validate proposed methodologies on representative industrial mock-ups and test pieces
  • Participate in industrial qualification and validation activities with Westinghouse NDE experts
  • Present research results at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals

Preferred qualifications

Ultrasonic testing fundamentals knowledge; Wave propagation and acoustics background; Signal and image processing experience; Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar scientific programming tools; Experimental measurements and data analysis skills; Scientific modelling and numerical simulation experience; Strong analytical mindset and scientific curiosity; Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; Interest in industrial research and field applications
