Required qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program (Master's degree in Engineering may substitute)
  • 4–6 years of engineering experience for Engineer III level; minimum 6 years engineering experience or 5 years with Professional Engineer registration for Senior level
  • Minimum 1 year of nuclear experience
  • Meet ANSI requirements for position per Nuclear Operating Fleet Administrative Procedure AD-LS-ALL-0011
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access/Security clearance
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment as needed

About this role

Duke Energy Nuclear's Corporate Design Engineering team seeks a Civil Nuclear Engineer III or Senior Civil Nuclear Engineer to develop engineering design solutions at McGuire Nuclear Station, supporting risk reduction, equipment obsolescence remediation, and plant modernization across Duke's nuclear fleet.

Responsibilities

  • Develop scope, technical basis, installation and testing requirements for engineering design changes including stress analysis, structural analysis, dynamic/seismic analysis, steel and concrete design
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluate alternatives, and present recommendations to resolve issues
  • Provide ongoing support of assigned engineering design changes through work order reviews, corrective action program assignments, and field installation support activities
  • Develop or revise design/procurement specifications and technical requirements documents to support engineering design changes
  • Develop or revise complex engineering calculations impacted by engineering design changes
  • Develop licensing screens and evaluations that support engineering design changes
  • Revise site design basis documents, design drawings, and regulatory documents impacted by engineering design changes

Preferred qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Proficient in engineering theories, principles, and project management
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer
  • Strong background in Mechanics of Materials and Finite Element Analysis
  • Working knowledge of Structural Analysis software (ANSYS, GTStrudl, or similar)
  • Experience with Dynamic/Seismic Structural Analysis
  • Working level knowledge of Stress Analysis software programs (SuperPipe, AutoPipe, Caesar II)
  • Working knowledge of ASME Codes (B31.1, Section III, Section IX, Section XI), AISC Steel Construction Codes (ASD, LRFD), and ACI Concrete Design Code
  • Familiarity with Solidworks or equivalent 3D modeling software
  • Experience with nuclear industry standard design process

Location, schedule, and travel

McGuire Nuclear Station. Office environment with plant work for system walkdowns and field support; 5–15% travel; Emergency Response Organization callout and on-call duty rotation requirements possible; occasional overnight travel; additional hours as business needs require.
